<image:title>Home - What is a Co-Op?</image:title>
<image:caption>Our cooperative preschool is a unique space where families come together to be collective and active partners in the developmental journey students experience throughout their early childhood. OCNS is powered and operated by the dedicated members of the Co-Op community. Everything from this website to maintenance projects in the Play Yard are at the hands of our wonderful OCNS families. As a family-run school we operate with a Board of Directors made up of parents/caregivers of students attending OCNS. Each family holds a committee aide position if not on the Board. Our Board, Director, teaching staff, and families work hand-in-hand to create an enriching, supportive, and progressive learning community. Everyday you will find two Co-Teachers and 2 parents working in each class. We maintain about a 1:3 ratio in our Greenhouse classes and 1:4 ratio in our Sunroom & Treehouse classes.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Greenhouse Co-Teacher Miss Ciara graduated magna cum laude from Cal Poly Pomona with a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Studies and is currently working toward her master’s degree in Child Life at the University of La Verne. She has been in the field of early childhood education for nearly ten years, with Oneonta being a very special part of that journey, first spending five years here, taking a short break, and then returning. Working with young children is Miss Ciara’s true passion. She loves seeing the world through their eyes, sharing in their wonder, and sparking their curiosity as they learn and grow. Building meaningful connections and creating joyful learning experiences are at the heart of her teaching. Outside the classroom, Miss Ciara enjoys spending time with her one-year-old son, Rylee, who keeps her days full of laughter and adventure. She also loves reading, listening to podcasts, traveling, going to the beach, and playing with her two dogs, Finn and Milo.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Team - Ms. Mary Greenhouse Co-Teacher</image:title>
<image:caption>Ms. Mary began teaching preschool in 2000 and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Child Development from Cal State LA in 2004. Her goal as a preschool teacher is to foster the children's emotional and social development while creating a safe environment for them to ask questions and explore. Ms. Mary took a break from teaching full time when her daughter was born in 2010 but continued teaching part-time. Even as a mom, she applied the same philosophies and practices she used as a teacher while raising her own kids. Ms. Mary joined OCNS in October 2022 and has since developed a deep appreciation for the co-op model, cherishing the relationships she builds with families and the community. On days she is not teaching or driving her kids around to their many activities, she enjoys watching shows and movies with her husband. She also loves getting lost in a good book and baking cookies.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Originally from the UK, Harriet trained professionally as a dancer at London Contemporary Dance School and California Institute of the Arts. After graduating and relocating to Los Angeles she shifted focus to early childhood and began sharing her love of music and movement with young children. When Harriet’s son began attending OCNS in 2022, she fell in love with the school and its magic. She jumped at the chance of joining the incredible team of educators! As an early childhood educator, her goal is to provide children with an enriching experience that empowers them to feel, explore and create. She also believes that nature is a huge part of learning and strives for a nature-based curriculum. When she isn’t teaching, Harriet enjoys adventures with her husband and son, spending time in nature, and crafting. She is a champion of progressive and child-centered early education approaches with an AA in Early Childhood Education and is pursuing her BA in Child Development. Caitlin prioritizes professional development opportunities as she advances her career. She has been submerged in the childcare scene through daycares and nannying and absolutely loves forming connections with her little friends and getting to see them develop new skills and gain confidence. <image:caption>Treehouse Co-Teacher Michelle started her OCNS journey as a parent, then a board member, then a teacher sub, and is now thrilled to become a part of the full-time teaching staff! She studied Business Administration and Communications at the University of Portland in Oregon where she was raised. She is one of five children and grew up babysitting and caring for kids and has always had her heart in early childhood education. With the birth of her son Charlie in 2020, Michelle decided to take a step into the education world and led a parent-and-me nature class in Pasadena. Once she joined the Oneonta community as a parent, she decided to pursue her dream of going back to school to study Early Childhood Education. During her time as a board member, she finished her ECE teaching credits and was able to start subbing in our classrooms. Joining Miss Caitlin this year in Treehouse, Michelle is excited to teach your children through the power of play - using books, movement, music, and exploration of our natural spaces. She enjoys curling up with a good book in her spare time, and loves spending time at the beach.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mission & Philosophy - Philosophy</image:title>
<image:caption>OCNS recognizes that above all we must continuously work to ensure a Co-Op community that is welcoming, inclusive, diverse, and operating from a place of equity. This is achieved through thoughtful conversations that inform policy and curriculum rooted in anti-bias practices. We believe that each child brings uniqueness to the preschool experience. We honor this individuality by creating space for each child to develop on a social-emotional level at their own pace. As a relationship-driven community we believe that the roles traditionally seen as Teacher (Contributor) and Student (Learner) are actually dual-existing roles. Teachers and parents learn together, from each other, and from the children. Similarly, children learn from parents, teachers, and their peers. Finally, the environment, often referenced as the third teacher, plays a pivotal role in a child’s early development. With this in mind we utilize an experiential learning, child-led, play-based approach. OCNS students are the guiding force of their early education. They learn collectively and develop secure feelings about their contribution to a community, value different perspectives, explore new opportunities, and have a broader lens for learning- all while playing.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mission & Philosophy - Anti-bias Curriculum</image:title>
<image:caption>OCNS is a space, a collective of families and teachers who come together to support children in nurturing, adventurous, organic yet purposeful learning experiences. As a Co-Op school we recognize that everyone in our community adds strength and value. We foster an environment where children (& their grown ups) are encouraged to share about their family make-up, culture and traditions, special moments, language, abilities and strengths, passions and motivations. Our classrooms are thoughtfully curated alongside our students to be reflective of our local community and larger society. This can be seen through the books in our library, music we listen to and songs we sing, language we use, events we host, and more!</image:caption>

<image:title>Programs - Greenhouse (2-3) - The beginning of something bigger.</image:title>
<image:caption>The Greenhouse is where it all begins. The true emergent foundation for all that is to come at Oneonta Cooperative. In this space children will feel heard and respected- just as they will come to expect and witness in each of the OCNS classes. Children will know they are an important part of community, learn through modeling about being an empathetic friend and communicative partner. The Greenhouse is the launching pad for all of the values that OCNS holds at the forefront of the entire Co-Op. Students, their families, and their teachers grow together in the Greenhouse to thrive throughout all their subsequent years at OCNS. Relationships and play, that’s #TheOCNSway.</image:caption>

<image:caption>How does light move? Can you feel sound? What’s inside my body? Does my friend’s heart move like mine? What is art for? In STEAM Enrichment we ask all the questions and seek to find answers and information through a child led process. Though, this isn’t simply about finding the answer to a question but enjoying the journey that each question takes us on. When moving through this exploration students are able to problem solve and think critically about the How and Why.</image:caption>

<image:title>Programs - Little Explorers (12-23 months) - Play & Community</image:title>
<image:caption>Play is at the core of our identity. We believe children learn by exploring the world around them and having fun (& have we mentioned getting messy,) while doing it. At OCNS we provide a safe and enriching space for our youngest friends to play and do what they do best- engage in curious adventures. The fundamentals of all learning begin with a child who is given the opportunity to navigate their interests at an early age, at their own pace. Additionally, we are a place where families find community. We value the contributions and presence of every member of our community and seek to create bonds with a child and family that go far beyond the preschool years. This is #TheOCNSway.</image:caption>

<image:title>Programs - Sunroom & Treehouse (3-5) - Active Participants, Expanding Minds</image:title>
<image:caption>At OCNS, learning happens through doing, questioning, and exploring. Children are encouraged to follow their curiosity, engage in open-ended play, and develop critical thinking skills through hands-on experiences. Whether investigating a new topic, reflecting in conversation, or experimenting through trial and error, students learn organically and collaboratively in a space that values inquiry and imagination. Our mixed-age classrooms provide opportunities for autonomy and collaboration, fostering social-emotional growth, self-regulation, and confidence. Through small group projects, personal storytelling, and open-ended explorations, children actively shape their learning experience—discovering, sharing, and growing together. This is #TheOCNSway.</image:caption>
